Catherine Winkler

Catherine Winkler is a nurse practicing for over 43 years who currently works as a nurse practitioner in primary care. She earned her Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree from the University of Connecticut in 1979 and a Master’s in Public Health and Hospital Administration (MPH) from New York Medical College in 1995.

Catherine held positions in in critical care (adult, pediatric and neonatal) as well as managed cardiovascular service lines in the role of director. She later when on to obtain a PhD from Yale University in 2009 on full scholarship with her research grant -funded about arrhythmias in patients with acute coronary syndromes. Further, she obtained a master’s certificate and is licensed as a nurse practitioner becoming board certified in adult-geriatric care.

She has taught at the graduate level at Fairfield University and has contributed to the literature in the areas of healthcare policy and cardiology. Catherine has been involved in global health for several years, contributing content to nursing courses and curriculums when requested by our global partners and has traveled to teach and deliver care at international sites.

Catherine, who currently works as a nurse practitioner for the Nuvance Healthcare system, has contributed to the organization through policy and procedure development of primary care orientation program for physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants and nursing over the years, developing programs such as an ambulatory outpatient intravenous therapy department and advancement of trauma level designation for Danbury Hospital.

She has worked in the division of nursing focused on practice and standardization at Danbury Hospital as well as at Stamford hospital where she led the program for Stamford Hospital’s initial Magnet designation.

In the area of research, Catherine was the project manager of an international clinical trial, PULSE that studied the use of inpatient electrocardiographic monitoring for Yale University School of Nursing and has mentored several students on their thesis work. She continues to provide direction and support for our international colleagues as projects are put forth for collaborative research in her role as chair of the International Nurse Executive Committee (INEC) at Nuvance Health. This committee was established late last year by Catherine with administrative guidance and includes membership from our academic and clinical partners, both domestic and international sites.

Together, with the Director of Global Health, Catherine has spent the past years working to increase awareness of Global Health and to establish an interdisciplinary approach by encouraging nurses to join the medical teams that learn and work together using the principles of bidirectionality, sustainability and the creation of long-term relationships. Further, she has contributed to the Global Health magazine as an editor and author of the nursing page. She continues to work within the Global Health Department to establish nursing scholarships in global health and to promote a greater awareness of the importance of global healthcare in our world.

Catherine enjoys offering her time to global health initiatives and has served with Hearts around the World. She is active in philanthropic work for the organization, CURESMA. As a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Catherine continues to stay active in nursing and is dedicated to giving back to the profession.

Catherine enjoys travel, hiking, and time spent with her family and has resided in Newtown, CT for over 35 years, living with her husband on a part-time basis in CT, Utah, and Texas. She has a 4-year-old granddaughter, Anna, in Texas where the two can be found baking, reading, and being outdoors.
